Seven strands of glass beads with small gold-filled beads interspersed. Twenty-
seven ancient Roman glass pendants highlight this necklace. These pendants
began life as glass lamps, cups, bottles, and vases in the ancient Roman Empire,
circa 1800BC-350BC. Farmers in Balkh, one of the world's oldest cities in
northern Afghanistan, plow up pieces of this glass in their fields. After a few
thousand years in the earth, these fragments are ground down into the shapes
you see on this necklace. Gold-filled cones and clasp.
